If you do not have certain types of health coverage, or are not using that coverage for your care, you generally have the right to a written good faith estimate of expected health care charges.
The estimate explains the total expected cost of health care items and services, including related costs such as medical tests. You may request an estimate before scheduling care.
When you should receive your estimate
- Care scheduled 3–9 business days ahead: within 1 business day after scheduling.
- Care scheduled 10 or more business days ahead: within 3 business days after scheduling.
- An estimate requested before scheduling: within 3 business days after your request.
If a provider’s or facility’s bill is at least $400 more than that provider’s or facility’s good faith estimate, you may be eligible to dispute the bill through the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process. Keep a copy of your estimate and any bills.
